You can probably decode this paragraph - with a bit of effort - but imagine if everything you read looked as confusing as this...
how much harder would life be?

Most of us take it completely for granted, like breathing or sleeping and you are doing it right now – reading. Try and imagine for a moment what life would be like without this basic skill - you could not read the instructions on a bottle of prescription medicine, you would struggle to read the job adverts in the local paper or take in information on web sites.

Our mission is to support secondary school pupils to become confident and enthusiastic readers.

At Reading Matters our proven range of tried and tested interventions can change the lives of young people who are reluctant or struggling readers. We train and support a growing network of Reading Mentors and offer training programmes for individual volunteers, schools, parents and corporate clients to help young people improve their reading skills and their confidence.

We have over 12 years experience in offering literacy support and training and can tailor programmes to meet your specific needs. We are a registered charity and a not-for-profit social enterprise.

Improving reading skills – changing lives.

Reading Matters at School

For over 12 years the Reading Matters team has recruited, trained and supported thousands of volunteer reading mentors in schools across the UK. This valuable experience has enabled us to develop the expertise to design and deliver a range of tried and tested training programmes, providing a broad range of literacy support. We offer accredited training and workshops for school governors, parents, carers teaching assistants, librarians and other support staff, as well as pupils or students themselves, developing specific one to one literacy support skills.

We are also happy to visit your school to find out more about your specific requirements and will then design and deliver a bespoke programme of training and support to meet your individual school’s needs. Read more

Reading Matters at Work

Our Reading Matters at Work training supports the Corporate Social Responsibility Programme of forward-thinking organisations with a genuine interest in community engagement.

We provide employees from a wide range of organisations, from the finance world to a large printing company, with the skills and confidence to volunteer as one to one reading mentors in schools. Reading Matters can offer taster workshops or full training for staff and can broker and support partnerships with local schools. Read more

Reading Matters in the Community

We welcome volunteers from the community, from all walks of life and from all educational backgrounds. We recruit, train and place our volunteers to work as reading mentors on a one to one basis, with pupils in schools. We work hard to place the right volunteer with the appropriate partner school and we offer ongoing support, advice and regular ‘top up’ training

In addition to the provision of volunteer reading mentors in schools we also train groups within the community such as representatives from the emergency services and professional sports teams. Read more

Reading Matters at Home

Our Reading Matters at Home programme has been developed specifically for parents or carers who want the skills and confidence to effectively support their children’s reading in the home environment. Our courses include simple, fun and practical techniques to help develop the literacy skills of children from toddlers to teenagers. The course can also help parents and carers build a stronger home/school partnership. Read more
