This is a practical and fun one to one supported reading workshop, designed specifically for young people in both Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5. The course provides students with the skills and confidence to partner a younger pupil who may struggle with reading. The programme is accredited through the National Open College Network at level two, can contribute toward Duke of Edinburgh Awards and adds value to a CV.

The Introduction to Reading Leaders is a two hour informal and enjoyable literacy awareness workshop which will prepare students who are considering volunteering as mentors. The workshop will set the scene and provide an overview of the programme. It will also highlight the responsibilities and rewards of becoming a Reading Leader and supporting younger pupils on a one to one basis.

The workshop provides a range of options and strategies to help tackle low levels of literacy and self esteem and can also help to foster positive relationships across the school.

Mentors gain huge satisfaction from the knowledge that they are helping to support and inspire young people by improving their reading skills and by building self confidence.
Adult volunteers are recruited from the general public; from all walks of life, all sections of the community and across all ages. What they all share is a love of reading and the time, patience and desire to help to improve the lives of young people in a fun and practical way.

Volunteer Reading Mentor
This is an accredited course aimed at training parents and carers to offer one to one reading support at home. It provides the tools to help identify reading difficulties; delivers strategies to help parents and carers cope with struggling readers and can also promote a strong and healthy home/school partnership.
